Securing today's enterprise computing environments means understanding how virtualization is used. Organizations must consider how to secure virtualization solutions used both on-premises in and the cloud. In this course, you'll learn to identify various types of virtualization solutions such as network virtualization, operating system virtualization, desktop, and app virtualization. You will then learn to distinguish the difference between type 1 and type 2 hypervisors. Next, you'll focus on virtualization security and how to deploy virtual machines on-premises. Lastly, you'll learn to work with application containers. This course is one of a collection of courses that prepares learners for the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP+) CAS-004 exam.

IN THIS COURSE

  • 1m 21s
In this video, you’ll learn more about your instructor and this course. In this course, you’ll learn the various types of virtualization, as well as hypervisor types. Then, you’ll focus on virtualization security and how to deploy virtual machines on-premises. Lastly, you’ll work with application containers. This course is one of a collection of courses that prepares learners for the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner or CASP+ CAS-004 exam. FREE ACCESS
  • 7m 28s
In this video, you’ll learn more about virtualization. You’ll see this is a big part of any enterprise computing environment, whether that virtualization takes place on-premises or in the cloud. First, you’ll learn about IT services or app isolation. This means you have virtual machines, databases, or specific applications that are virtualized, offering portability. Portability means you can move the virtual machine around on different hypervisor hosts to run virtual machine operating systems. FREE ACCESS

    3.  Hypervisors
    6m 43s
In this video, you’ll learn more about Hypervisor. A Hypervisor is a software that runs the virtual machine's, or VM, guests. It's designed to regulate guest VM access to physical hardware resources. When you configure a virtual machine guest you'll configure it with a certain amount of RAM. You’ll see this might even be dynamically allocated depending on the workload requirements in that VM. FREE ACCESS

    4.  Virtualization Security
    11m 6s
In this video, you’ll learn more about virtualization. Virtualization is widely used by individuals and enterprises. You’ll learn virtual machines are very flexible. This means that if a virtual machine needs more RAM, you don't have to physically order the RAM, wait for it to arrive, and install it in a server physically. You can adjust settings and have that change in effect virtually instantaneously. FREE ACCESS

    5.  Deploying Windows Virtual Machines
    8m 45s
In this video, you’ll watch a demo. In this demonstration, you’ll deploy a Windows Server 2019 Virtual Machine on VMware Workstation 16 Pro. VMware Workstation is a Type 2 Hypervisor, it’s not the operating system. Instead, it relies upon an underlying operating system, in this case, it’s running on Windows 10. This works fine for testing or software development. VMware Workstation in this context depends on the underlying operating system's security configuration. FREE ACCESS

    6.  Deploying Linux Virtual Machines
    6m 17s
In this video, you’ll watch a demo. In this demonstration, you’ll configure a Linux Virtual Machine on-premises. You’ll use the latest free Kali Linux ISO to run a live version of Kali Linux on-premises. This is good for things like vulnerability scanning, network reconnaissance, and testing the security of your environment. To get started in your VMware Workstation, your underlying Windows OS has already hardened. You’ll click Create New Virtual Machine and then choose Next. FREE ACCESS

    7.  Encrypting Virtual Machines
    3m 45s
In this video, you’ll watch a demo. In this demonstration, you’ll learn how to encrypt a virtual machine. Now encryption for virtual machines is done differently depending on the Virtualization Solution you use. Here, you’ll be encrypting using VMware Workstation Pro, a Type two Hypervisor. You’ll use a Kali Linux virtual machine here. You’ll see it's up and running in VMware Workstation. FREE ACCESS

    8.  Application Containers
    7m 39s
In this video, you’ll watch a demo. You’ll learn that Containerized Applications run within a specific boundary, similar to how a virtual machine operating system runs within the boundary of that VM guest. You can have multiple application containers that contain only application files that run on a Container Engine host. You’ll see there’s a Docker Engine running. The Docker is one of the more popular container engine solutions. FREE ACCESS

    9.  Working with Docker Desktop
    6m 43s
In this video, you’ll watch a demo. You’ll learn that when you want to run application containers on-premises, you'll need a host that supports running containers. Here, you want to run Docker containers. You’ll head to hub.docker.com to download and install Docker desktop for Windows. When you work with application containers, the application container doesn’t contain the OS, just the files to run whatever the app is supposed to do. FREE ACCESS

    10.  Creating a Container Registry
    10m 19s
In this video, you’ll watch a demo. In this demonstration, you’ll create a Container Registry. This is for container images for application containers. You can do this on-premises if you're using an on-premises solution like a Docker server. In this case, you’ll do it in a cloud computing environment. In the Azure portal, you’ll sign into your account. Then, you’ll click Create a resource and search for registry. From the list, you’ll choose Container Registry. FREE ACCESS

    11.  Deploying an Application Container
    4m 53s
In this video, you’ll watch a demo. You’ll learn that to run an application container, you need somewhere to run it. You’ll also need to have a container image. A container is a running instance of a container image. Every container is based on an image, and that image might be designed to run for Windows-based applications or Linux-based. You’ll run it in the Azure Cloud as a container instance. FREE ACCESS

    12.  Course Summary
    1m 2s
In this video, you’ll summarize what you’ve learned in this course. You’ve learned how to secure various types of on-premises and Cloud Virtualization Solutions, as well as Application Containers. You explored types of virtualization and hypervisors Virtualization security. You also learned to deploy Windows and Linux virtual machines and how to encrypt virtual machines. You also learned how to work with application containers running application containers on-premises as well as in the cloud. FREE ACCESS
