Tableau Prep Builder is all about preparing your data source and getting it ready for deeper analysis. In this 10-video course, learners will discover how to perform a variety of different operations, including clean-up steps, data aggregation, and split, group, and replacement actions. You will begin by exploring steps involved in applying cleaning operations by using Tableau Prep Builder, then learning how to use the Split tools to separate values into new fields. Discover how to perform manual group and replace operations by editing individual data values and selecting multiple similar values; how to use the group and replace fuzzy match tools; and how to create and apply custom data roles to clean data quickly. Explore how to insert Aggregate steps to aggregate, group, or summarize data; insert an Aggregate step to remove exact data set duplicates, and insert calculated fields into a flow. The course concludes by demonstrating how to create calculated fields with regular expressions, then showing steps involved in extending the functionality of Tableau Prep Builder via Python or R scripts.

Tableau Prep Builder is all about preparing your data source for deeper analysis, and in many cases, to do this you are going to need to use the clean tools. Clean-up operations can be performed at a number of different stages in your flow, including Pivot and Join steps. You can also create separate Clean steps and stack multiple clean-up operations. In some cases, directly editing individual values in a field can correct an issue or data discrepancy, but if there are numerous issues in your dataset, Clean operations can help to quickly clean up your data with minimal intervention. You will sometimes find that related values have been grouped in a single field in your dataset, or a field contains data that would be more easily analyzed as separate fields. The Split tools in Tableau Prep Builder can be used to separate component values in a field into entirely new fields. You can do this via an automatic or a manual split, depending on how your data is structured and how much control you need over how the data is split and the creation of new split fields. FREE ACCESS

    3.  Performing manual group & replace operations
    5m 11s
When there are variations in your data, it can be hard to perform detailed and accurate analysis. With Tableau Prep Builder's Group and Replace tools, you can start to harmonize datasets by identifying values that should be grouped and removing discrepancies. In this video, we'll look at quick manual and selection-based group and replace operations. FREE ACCESS

    4.  Using the Group & Replace fuzzy match tools
    4m 3s
Among Tableau Prep Builder's Group and Replace tools are a number of automated, fuzzy matching operations that can be performed. You can, for example, group values automatically based on pronunciation, common characters in values, or spelling variations. If the discrepancies in the field you are analyzing are minor, these tools can save you a lot of time when cleaning up your data. FREE ACCESS

    5.  Creating custom data roles to clean data
    5m 48s
If you have access to Tableau Server or Tableau Online, you can create and publish custom data roles, which can then be used to verify and group data in a flow. In this video, we'll look at publishing custom data roles to Tableau Online and then using these custom roles in conjunction with Tableau Prep Builder's Group and Replace tools. FREE ACCESS

    6.  Using data aggregation steps
    3m 35s
The aggregate tool in Tableau Prep Builder allows you to change the granularity of data. This is very useful if you want to summarize or group your data, or adjust its structure before moving onto further operations in your flow (such as joins and unions). FREE ACCESS

    7.  Removing duplicate data in Tableau Prep Builder
    3m 38s
Tableau Prep Builder does not offer a specific tool to automatically remove data duplicates in a dataset, and identifying these can be difficult. However, if you are sure that there are exact copies of values in your data, or would simply like to check, you can use an aggregate step to quickly remove duplicate values. FREE ACCESS

    8.  Working with calculated fields
    4m 44s
Calculated fields can be used to create entirely new fields using either only calculations or, more typically, in conjunction with the data in existing fields. In most cases, a calculated field will be added to the field list, with the original component fields untouched. However, in some cases, the calculated field can replace the original field being used. FREE ACCESS

    9.  Using regular expressions in calculated fields
    3m 35s
You can use regular expressions when building calculated fields in Tableau Prep Builder. Regular expressions, sometimes referred to as regex, are particularly useful when working with strings or text-based data. See how to use regular expressions in calculated fields in this video. FREE ACCESS

    10.  Working with scripts in Tableau Prep
    2m 38s
If you are familiar with Python or R programming languages, you can build your own scripts to bring additional functionality into Tableau Prep Builder. To do this, you will need to have written your script, be running Rserve or Python and TabPy on your machine, and insert a Script step into your flow. FREE ACCESS
