The text answers the basic question "how do computer networks and internets operate?" in the broadest sense. It provides a comprehensive, self-contained tour through all of networking that describes low-level details such as data transmission and wiring, network technologies such as LANs and WANs, internetworking protocols, and application software. It shows how protocols use the underlying hardware and how applications use the protocol stack to provide functionality for users. It is usually more efficient to manage large, complex computer networks from one or a few attended locations, using automated control and remote system operation and with many network facilities unattended. But the critical importance of these networks to a business require that such network management be effective and responsive. So keeping in mind all these problems this book is divided in four units.
