About the Authors

ERIC SPIEGEL is a senior partner at Booz & Company based in McLean, VA, who leads Booz & Company’s work for global energy, chemicals, and utilities clients. He has over 25 years of energy and utility consulting industry experience leading major energy client assignments in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North and South America. Mr. Spiegel also led Booz & Company’s international consulting business in Asia-Australasia-Middle East and lived in Tokyo from 1999 to 2003. His areas of expertise include corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions, holding company and business unit organization, major capital projects, and major cost restructuring, as well as outsourcing and offshoring, post-merger integration, and procurement and supply chain redesign. Eric holds an MBA from The Amos Tuck Graduate School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College, where he was an Edward Tuck Scholar, and a BA with Honors in Economics from Harvard University. He is a long-standing contributor to strategy+business and other publications. Prior to joining Booz & Company, Mr. Spiegel worked with Brown Boveri (now ABB) in marketing and with Temple, Barker & Sloane (now Oliver Wyman) in their energy consulting practice.

NEIL McARTHUR is an Amsterdam-based senior partner at Booz & Company who leads the firm’s European business. Mr. McArthur has more than 24 years of experience in the energy, chemicals, and utility industries. He has extensive consulting experience leading major assignments across the globe. His areas of expertise include corporate strategy, and mergers and acquisitions, holding company and business unit organization, postmerger integration, major capital projects and cost restructuring, process redesign and transformation, procurement and supply chain redesign, and shared services design. Neil holds an MBA with distinction from INSEAD and a BSc. (1st class Honors, George Harvey Prize) in civil engineering from the University of Glasgow. He is a Chartered Engineer M.I.Mech.Eng. and a Sainsbury Management Fellow. He has contributed to numerous publications, including the book CEO: Chief European Officer— Business Leadership in Europe. Prior to joining Booz & Company, Mr. McArthur worked for Shell International Petroleum B.V. Exploration & Production on assignment in Qatar and the Netherlands.

ROB NORTON is the executive editor of strategy+business in New York. He is a former executive editor of Fortune magazine, and an adjunct professor at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. His work has appeared in numerous publications. Rob is editor of CFO Thought Leaders: Advancing the Frontiers of Finance and coauthor of Content Critical: Gaining Competitive Advantage through High Quality Web Content, and The Web Content Style Guide: An Essential Reference for Online Writers, Editors and Managers.
