A skills gap is a significant gap between an organization’s current capabilities and the skills it needs to achieve its goals and meet customer demand. Among the US organizations surveyed by ATD, 83 percent now report a skills gap in their organizations, with 78 percent reporting that they expect to face such a skills gap in the future. When an organization has a large skills gap in its workforce, it risks not meeting customer expectations and demands. This report focuses on what talent development professionals say about current and future skills gaps in their organizations and supplements that research with additional information pulled from news articles, reports, and other sources. It also includes case studies and interviews with talent development teams from organizations that are proactively addressing skills gaps in thoughtful, informed, and targeted ways. The goal is to help talent development professionals understand where critical gaps are and provide a road map for closing the gaps strategically.
