The first part of this JIT axiom refers to the thorough 5S implementation needed to lay the groundwork for subsequent improvements. The 5S’s are the foundation—or workplace “pillars”—upon which we establish flow production, visual control, standard operations, and other JIT building blocks. Working through the process properly will turn a factory in a few years into a close approximation of the JIT production system.

On the other hand, it takes only a moment for a workplace to begin falling apart. This process also begins with the 5S pillars—in this case, shaky pillars. No factory can manufacture well without a strong 5S foundation.

The 5S’s apply not only to factories but to administrative, clerical, and sales offices as well. This practical and comprehensive manual is specifically written for people active in community rationalization programs, top management, and professional consultants.

About the Author

Hiroyuki Hirano graduated from Senshu University’s School of Economics in 1970 and joined a large software company to work in the consulting division. There he laid the conceptual groundwork for Japan’s first full-fledged production management system. After leaving the software company, he established JIT Management Laboratory Company, Ltd. By using his personal interpretation of the just-in-time philosophy, he helped bring the JIT production revolution and JIT sales and distribution concepts to dozens of companies in Japan, as well as major firms worldwide.

Mr. Hirano has many Japanese publications, and his books available in English include JIT Factory Revolution: A Pictorial Guide to Factory Design of the Future (Productivity Press, 1987), and JIT Implementation Manual: The Complete Guide to Just-in-Time Manufacturing (Productivity Press, 1995).
