Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can lead to serious accidents. The US Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing regulations for Commercial Driver Licensed (CDL) employees are contained in 49 CFR Part 382, and 49 CFR Part 40. This course is designed to educate CDL employees about the indicators and consequences of substance abuse and alcohol misuse in the transportation industry and the US laws that relate to drug and alcohol testing. CDL employees will learn what their rights and obligations are in a DOT drug and alcohol testing program. In particular, this course covers reasonable suspicion of illicit drug and alcohol use. Employees will learn how to handle a situation where a co-worker is suspected of being under the influence, and that a DOT-trained supervisor can direct a driver to be drug or alcohol tested whenever he or she exhibits signs of drug or alcohol abuse. The supervisor's decision must be based on observations concerning the appearance, behavior, speech, or body odors of the driver. This course aims to educate learners about types of drugs and alcohol and their harmful effects, what to do if alcohol or drug use is suspected in the workplace, what to expect when drug or alcohol test results are positive and consequences thereof, and the return-to-duty process. This course was developed with subject matter support provided by EnSafe Inc., a global professional services company focusing on engineering, environment, health and safety, and information technology. Please note, the course materials and content were current with the laws and regulations at the time of the last expert review, however, they may not reflect the most current legal developments.
